Can Benfica Catch an Unstoppable Porto in the Liga Portugal Title Race?

  • Porto have won all ten of their league matches and show no signs of slowing down. Benfica remain their closest challengers, but closing the gap on the unbeaten leaders is becoming an increasingly difficult task.

FC Porto are enjoying an extraordinary start to the season. After ten rounds of Liga Portugal, Francesco Farioli's side have maintained a perfect record of ten wins from ten matches, collecting 30 points and opening up a five-point lead over their closest challengers, Benfica.

The Lisbon giants are hardly having a poor season themselves. Benfica have 25 points from eight wins, one draw, and one defeat, a record that would normally put them in an excellent position to challenge for the championship. The problem is that Porto have yet to drop a single point.

The Dragons have also won the first direct meeting between the two teams. On September 20, Porto defeated Benfica 3-1 at the Estádio do Dragão, a result that accounts for a significant part of the current gap in the standings.

What Makes Porto So Strong?

The biggest strength of Farioli's team has been their balance. Porto have scored 25 goals while conceding just four, giving them the strongest defensive record in the competition. Their consistency has allowed them to overcome difficult matches while also delivering convincing victories.

Their latest result was another demonstration of that dominance. On October 31, Porto thrashed Estoril 4-0, with goals from Victor Froholdt, Borja Sainz, André Silva, and Gabri Veiga.

In attack, Borja Sainz and Gabri Veiga, with five goals each, are among Porto's leading scorers. But beyond individual performances, the team have found different ways to score without sacrificing the defensive solidity that has defined their season.

Benfica Have the League's Best Attack

If there is one reason to believe Benfica can close the gap, it is their attacking production. The Eagles have scored 27 goals in ten matches, two more than Porto, and boast the league's leading scorer in Vangelis Pavlidis, who has ten goals.

The Greek striker was decisive again on November 2, converting the penalty that secured Benfica a 1-0 victory over Alverca. It was a third consecutive league win for Marco Silva's side, who are determined to keep the pressure on the leaders.

The difference becomes clear when matches get difficult. Benfica have conceded eight goals, twice as many as Porto, and have already dropped five points. Their attacking numbers are impressive, but they need greater consistency to turn that firepower into a closer title race.

Can Benfica Close the Gap?

A five-point deficit is far from decisive after just ten matches. There is still plenty of football to be played, and Benfica will have the opportunity to host Porto on February 28, 2027, in a meeting that could prove crucial if both teams maintain their positions near the top.

However, catching the leaders will require more than simply winning matches. Benfica must maintain their own momentum while hoping Porto finally start dropping points, something that has yet to happen this season.

For now, Porto are firmly in control of the title race, but Benfica remain their closest threat. The Eagles have shown they can score enough goals to compete. Their challenge is finding the consistency required to chase a team that, after ten rounds, remains perfect.
