Memphis Depay Takes Over Corinthians' Number 10 Jersey
Corinthians officially announced that Dutch forward Memphis Depay will wear the number 10 shirt this season, a decision that was previously agreed upon but has caused frustration for Argentine midfielder Rodrigo Garro, the former holder of the jersey.
A Controversial but Prearranged Switch
The Brazilian club shared a video on social media featuring the ex-Atlético Madrid and Barcelona star holding up the iconic black-and-white jersey with "Memphis 10" printed on the back. According to reports from Ge, the number change was part of a contractual clause agreed upon when Depay signed last year.
Debut in the São Paulo Derby Against Santos
Depay will make his first appearance with the new number in Wednesday's derby against Santos, the club of Neymar, who also wears the number 10, at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo as part of the Campeonato Paulista. Until now, Rodrigo Garro had worn the 10, while Depay played with the number 94.
Speaking to TNT, Garro admitted his frustration with the decision but stated that he respects the club’s choice. “If the club thinks this is the best move and the right decision at this moment, I have to accept it. But it’s not something I’m happy about," said the Argentine, who will now wear the number 8 jersey. For his part, Depay downplayed the controversy, emphasizing that his relationship with Garro is bigger than a jersey number. He highlighted that both players will need each other to "make history" at Corinthians.
