A relationship that never quite clicked

Kevin De Bruyne heads into his second season at Napoli hoping for a fresh start after an injury-hit first year in Italy and a relationship with Antonio Conte that never truly developed. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, the Belgian admitted that he and his former coach simply saw things differently.

“You can't connect with everyone during your career, and that's fine,” De Bruyne explained. He did not portray the situation as a major conflict, but acknowledged that different personalities and different views of football can sometimes make that connection difficult.

De Bruyne was far more revealing when describing Conte's approach. “Conte is very rigid, more focused on the professional relationship. He only thinks about football. There is no personal connection with the players,” the former Manchester City star said.

A different feeling under Allegri

The arrival of Massimiliano Allegri has brought a noticeable change to life at Napoli. De Bruyne has only spent a short time working with the Italian coach, but has already noticed a different approach to managing players.

“Allegri is a little more relaxed, more informal and, from what I've seen, he takes more care of the personal relationship,” De Bruyne said.

At this stage of his career, enjoying football also matters. The Belgian made that particularly clear when discussing what continues to motivate him: “I don't play for money or anything else. I play because I want to and because I enjoy it.”

Leaving Napoli was never in his plans

De Bruyne also addressed the speculation surrounding his future after reports suggested his stay at Napoli could end after only one season.

“I never thought about leaving Napoli. I never said that,” he insisted. De Bruyne believes his direct personality can sometimes lead to comments being interpreted in ways he never intended, creating stories around his future that did not reflect his actual plans.

After a first campaign disrupted by physical problems, the midfielder now wants to enjoy the final years of his career and make a much bigger impact in Naples.

A familiar face could join him in Naples

There was also room to discuss Gabriel Jesus, who has been linked with a move to Napoli. De Bruyne knows the Brazilian particularly well after spending five seasons alongside him at Manchester City, and believes his former teammate could offer something different to Allegri's attack.

“Gabriel Jesus could bring quality. Quality in attack with the ball, out wide and in the build-up,” De Bruyne explained. He believes the Brazilian represents a different profile from Rasmus Hojlund and Lorenzo Lucca.

“If he came, he could help us. Also with his experience: he knows how to win,” added De Bruyne, although he made it clear that he has not personally called Jesus to convince him to make the move.
