The Night Amedspor Made History in Istanbul

On January 22, 2015, Galatasaray suffered one of their most unexpected defeats of the season. Playing at home, the Istanbul giants lost 2-0 to Amedspor, a club competing in Turkey's third tier at the time, in a Turkish Cup group-stage match.

The upset began in just the third minute, when Ercan Çapar put the visitors ahead with a shot that beat goalkeeper Sinan Bolat. Galatasaray pushed for an equalizer throughout the match but could not break down the visitors' defense.

Deep into stoppage time, Yusuf Yağmur scored Amedspor's second goal to seal a historic victory. The underdogs had beaten one of Turkey's biggest clubs on their own ground, giving their supporters a result to remember.

An Upset Nobody Saw Coming

The gap between the two clubs made the result even more remarkable. Galatasaray had international stars such as Wesley Sneijder, Felipe Melo, and Goran Pandev, while Amedspor were playing two divisions below the Turkish giants.

Galatasaray had also won their first meeting 4-1 in December 2014. But in the return fixture, Amedspor protected their early lead and eventually celebrated a victory few had imagined possible.

The defeat did not prevent Galatasaray from winning the 2014/15 Turkish Cup, as they went on to defeat Bursaspor 3-2 in the final. For Amedspor, however, that night in Istanbul became one of the most memorable results in the club's history.

Eleven Years Later, Everything Has Changed

On Saturday, November 7, the two teams will meet again in Istanbul, this time on Matchday 11 of the Süper Lig. And while Galatasaray remain the more established force in Turkish football, Amedspor arrive in a position that would have seemed almost impossible back in 2015.

After securing their first-ever promotion to the top flight in May 2026, the Diyarbakır club sit second with 23 points, just two behind Galatasaray. Their impressive start includes seven wins from ten matches and a convincing 5-1 victory over Eyüpspor in their most recent outing.

Can Amedspor Pull Off Another Upset?

The upcoming clash is about much more than revisiting a historic result. If Amedspor win in Istanbul again, they will move ahead of Galatasaray and become the new Süper Lig leaders, an extraordinary achievement for a newly promoted side.

Besnik Hasi's team will look to Gift Orban, one of the league's leading scorers with nine goals. On the other side stands Victor Osimhen, who also has nine goals and remains a key figure for Okan Buruk's Galatasaray.

Eleven years ago, Amedspor arrived in Istanbul as a third-division club and left with an unforgettable victory. This Saturday, they return to the same stage with the opportunity to pull off an even bigger surprise. Watch the showdown LIVE on beIN SPORTS.
