Fenerbahçe Survive in Champions League and Eliminate Lyon

Fenerbahçe secured a huge victory in France and booked their place in the Champions League league phase after defeating Olympique Lyonnais with goals from Vedat Muriqi and Archie Brown.

Fenerbahçe passed one of the biggest tests of their early season. The Turkish side defeated Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 on the road and completed a 3-2 aggregate victory to keep their Champions League journey alive.

The hosts increased the pressure after halftime and were finally rewarded in the 61st minute, when Malick Fofana pulled one back and restored the tension to a tie that still had plenty of time remaining.

The goal completely changed the closing stages of the match. Olympique Lyonnais pushed forward in search of the goal that could extend the tie, while Fenerbahçe focused on protecting their advantage.

The French side managed to put the ball in the net on two more occasions, but both goals were ruled out for offside. The Turkish team survived the late pressure and held onto the 2-1 lead until the final whistle.

The victory completed a 3-2 aggregate triumph for Fenerbahçe, confirming their qualification for the Champions League league phase and bringing Olympique Lyonnais’ European run to an end.

After navigating a tightly contested tie and surviving a difficult finish in France, Fenerbahçe will be among the 36 teams competing in the next stage of Europe’s premier club competition.
