Lautaro Puts Mourinho Reunion to One Side

Lautaro Martinez has made it clear that the past cannot become a distraction for Inter Milan ahead of one of their first major tests of the UEFA Champions League campaign. The Nerazzurri travel to the Santiago Bernabéu to face Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, setting up a special reunion given the Portuguese coach’s history with the Italian club.

Mourinho remains an iconic figure at Inter after leading the club to the historic Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League Treble during his time in Milan. Lautaro, however, had little interest in allowing nostalgia to dominate the buildup.

“Mourinho is a coach who won important titles at Inter. With all due respect to him, today we are focused on preparing for tomorrow’s match and doing our best,” the Argentine captain said.

Mbappe Is a Major Concern for Inter

For Lautaro, the challenge on the pitch is far more important. The striker highlighted the enormous quality throughout Real Madrid’s squad and singled out Kylian Mbappe as one of the biggest threats Inter will have to contain.

“We’re facing a great team with many top-level players. We have our own strengths. We’re also ready to face Mbappe, one of the best in the world,” Lautaro explained.

The Inter captain also praised Madrid’s work in strengthening their squad. “Madrid have strengthened very well. They’ve signed many quality players in defense,” he added ahead of one of the marquee matchups of the Champions League opening round.

The Champions League Is a Dream, Not an Obsession

Inter enter another European campaign determined to learn from their previous setbacks. Lautaro believes those difficult experiences must help the team grow and become better equipped to handle the biggest moments of the competition.

“Last year we were eliminated early, but it’s important to learn from our mistakes. I hope to give my all and take Inter as far as possible,” the striker said.

The Argentine did not hide Inter’s ambitions, but he was equally determined not to turn winning the competition into an all-consuming expectation. “The Champions League is a goal. As I always say, we all dream, but it’s not an obsession.”

Lautaro’s Job Goes Beyond Scoring Goals

Lautaro knows his responsibilities against Real Madrid will begin long before he gets anywhere near the opposition penalty area. Cristian Chivu’s system requires the forwards to contribute heavily without the ball and act as Inter’s first line of defense.

“Because of our style of pressing and play, I have to press and be attentive in the defensive phase. Beyond the manager asking me to do it, it comes naturally to me,” he explained.

That work rate could be particularly important at the Bernabéu. Against a Real Madrid side loaded with attacking talent, Lautaro will need to combine his goalscoring threat with the relentless off-the-ball work that has become a defining part of his game if Inter are to make a statement in Madrid.
