The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is back!

Hosted by Morocco, the 2025 AFCON - originally to be staged in Guinea - kicks off on Monday morning (December 22), with the opening match seeing Morocco go up against Comoros. The tournament’s final is scheduled for January 19 next year.

The 35th edition of the AFCON will take place across nine stadiums in six Moroccan cities and feature 24 teams - an increase from the previous 16. The teams are divided into six groups of four, with the top two from each group, along with the four best third-placed teams, advancing to the round of 16.

From there, the knockout rounds are all single-leg affairs, with ties decided by extra time and penalties if needed.

Holders Ivory Coast - who beat Nigeria 2-1 in the final last year - are in Group F and begin their title defence against Mozambique on December 25. Some players to watch at the tournament include Premier League stars such as Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, Manchester United’s Bryan Mbuemo, and Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush.
