Championship: Cardiff relegated as Millwall keep play-off hopes alive
Cardiff City's relegation to League One was confirmed on Saturday, while Millwall kept their Championship play-off hopes alive.
Cardiff City have been relegated from the Championship after playing out a goalless draw with West Bromwich Albion in the Welsh capital on Saturday.
The result leaves the Bluebirds bottom of the table and five points from safety with one game to play, sealing their return to League One for the first time since 2003.
Playing just their second match under interim boss Aaron Ramsey following the sacking of Omer Riza, Cardiff created a few promising chances in a desperate bid to keep their survival hopes alive, needing a win after Luton Town beat Coventry City earlier on Saturday.
Yousef Salech struck the woodwork in the 60th minute, while West Brom’s Adam Armstrong squandered a golden opportunity at the other end.
The draw extends Cardiff’s winless run to seven matches, while West Brom, who were playing under interim boss James Morrison after sacking Tony Mowbray, are now unbeaten in the teams' last eight meetings (three wins, five draws).
Elsewhere, Derby County snatched a late 1-0 win over Hull City at the MKM Stadium, providing a massive boost to their hopes of avoiding the drop.
Nathaniel Phillips was the hero, netting a dramatic winner from Craig Forsyth’s pinpoint delivery six minutes from time.
The result drags Hull into the drop zone, and they will be relegated if they lose to 16th-placed Portsmouth on the final matchday.
Elsewhere, Plymouth Argyle earned a spirited 2-1 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale, deepening their hosts' own relegation fears, though Argyle are all but down due to their poor goal difference.
Mustapha Bundu continued his fine form, opening the scoring in the 14th minute with a brilliant top-corner finish after combining with Bali Mumba.
Callum Wright added a second with a sweetly-taken volley in the 75th minute, before Emil Riis Jakobsen grabbed a late consolation goal for Preston on the stroke of full-time.
Bundu has now contributed to five goals in his last three games in the Championship, picking up four goals and an assist.
Preston are hovering one point above the relegation zone, with a difficult trip to Bristol City awaiting them on the final day.
Saturday's results also mean Stoke City are not out of relegation danger, though the Potters only need a point at Derby to confirm their second-tier status.
Further up the table, Millwall kept their play-off hopes alive with a 1-0 win over Swansea City at the Den, ending the visitors’ six-match unbeaten run.
George Saville netted the vital goal to keep Millwall’s slim hopes of promotion intact, firing a driven shot low into the center of the net late in the first half.
Josh Coburn missed a chance to double the lead, while Swansea were left frustrated by wastefulness in front of goal, particularly from Eom Ji-Sung and Zan Vipotnik.
Oxford United, meanwhile, secured their Championship status with a 2-0 win over Sunderland at the Kassam Stadium.
Ben Nelson opened the scoring with a guided header from a set-piece, and Michal Helik sealed the result with a well-taken volley early in the second half.
Sunderland were left frustrated by Oxford’s resilient defence, with the hosts impressively holding an opponent without a shot on target for the first time this league season.
Data debrief: Millwall on right side of fine margins
Millwall were one of the big winners from Saturday's games, and they are now level on points with sixth-placed Coventry with one game remaining.
Their 1-0 victory marked their 12th by that scoreline this season – more than any other Championship side.
In total, they’ve now featured in 20 matches ending with a 1-0 scoreline (won 12, lost eight) – the most in the league.
