Toronto FC v Minnesota United: Fraser convinced hosts are heading in 'right direction'
Toronto FC are yet to win a match in MLS this season, and they welcome high-flying Minnesota United to Canada this weekend.
Robin Fraser is sure Toronto FC are "moving in the right direction", despite the Reds still being without a win in MLS this year ahead of Saturday's clash with Minnesota United.
Toronto earned a creditable 1-1 draw with Inter Miami in their most recent game last Sunday, but that was just their third point in seven games this campaign.
It was the Reds' second straight draw after they held the Vancouver Whitecaps to a 0-0 one week earlier, and Fraser thinks their performances against strong opponents have been promising.
"I think we're definitely moving in the right direction," Fraser told reporters.
"We spoke in the press conferences about progress, and Joe Public is not concerned about progress until they see results.
"But it's going to be a process, and I'm really pleased with the commitment we've shown over the last couple of weeks.
"We talked about engagement a lot for the last two weeks, and playing against the best team in the West, and then the best team in the East, and being able to come out of that with some points, really speaks to the level of engagement the team is now playing with."
Minnesota, meanwhile, are flying high in third place in the Western Conference, level on 14 points with San Diego FC in second.
They beat New York City 2-1 last week, with Joaquin Pereyra's midfield performance drawing praise from coach Eric Ramsay.
"He did great. I think he probably represents what we are striving for in certain moments of the game," Ramsay said of Pereyra's display.
"He shows that level of calmness and composure to make sure that we can connect some passes and we can reorganise in more general play with the ball."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Toronto FC – Federico Bernardeschi
Bernardeschi scored from a Lorenzo Insigne assist for Toronto last time out, and the Italian duo now have a combined 69 goal contributions between them since they debuted in July 2022 (Bernardeschi – 40, Insigne – 29).
Minnesota United – Tani Oluwaseyi
Oluwaseyi has scored five goals over his last three matches in MLS, including netting in the opening minute of Minnesota's win over NYCFC.
He is the second player to score five times in a span of three regular-season games for Minnesota, along with Teemu Pukki, who did so in 2023.
MATCH PREDICTION – MINNESOTA UNITED WIN
The home side has not lost any of the four all-time meetings between Toronto and Minnesota, including Toronto winning both of their home matches against the Loons with a total of 12 goals scored over the two matches at BMO Field.
But that could be about to change on Saturday. Toronto are winless in 13 matches in all competitions (D5 L8) dating back to September, after a 1-1 draw with Miami last week.
This equals the longest winless run in all competitions in their club history (13 straight from May-August 2023).
And Minnesota are unbeaten in six straight matches (W4 D2) after opening the season with a loss, with their 14 points being their best tally through seven matches of any campaign.
