Amorim adamant out of favour Rashford can still push Man Utd forward
Despite not featuring in Ruben Amorim's past three squads, Marcus Rashford can still play a huge part in Manchester United's season.
Ruben Amorim wants Marcus Rashford to take on the responsibility of getting Manchester United back on track.
United's defeat at home to Bournemouth on Sunday now means they have lost three out of their last four league games. They were also dumped out of the EFL Cup by Tottenham.
The Red Devils will spend Christmas in the bottom half of the Premier League for the first time, but new head coach Amorim hopes long-serving players such as Rashford, who made his debut in February 2016, can improve the situation.
Amorim has not selected Rashford, who has hinted his future lies away from United, in his past three matchday squads, but the Portuguese is adamant the forward can still play a huge role for the club moving forward.
“Some guys have a big responsibility here because they have been here for a long time,” Amorim said.
“If you have big talents, we need big performance, big responsibility, big engagement to push everybody forward in this moment.
“This is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club. We have to face it and be strong.”
Rashford has scored just 11 Premier League goals in 48 appearances since the start of last season, but his productivity overall has made him one of the most noteworthy players of the post-Alex Ferguson era at United.
Since Rashford made his league debut, no player has scored more goals for United in the competition than the England international (87), while he has also managed 40 assists, which means he leads in terms of overall goal contributions (147).
Rashford scored in Amorim's opening game, as United drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town. He also netted twice against Everton, in a 4-0 win, a week later, but the Red Devils' form has since tailed off.
Amorim, though, is still confident in his ability to turn the ship around.
He said: “I know what I am going to do. That is so clear for me.
“I will not say I feel relaxed because I’m really frustrated. It’s a very difficult moment but we will solve problems step by step and find answers for everything.”
