Amorim has no choice but to play Man Utd youngsters
Wolves visit Manchester United on Saturday, with Ruben Amorim's Red Devils still buoyant after their incredible Europa League win over Lyon.
Ruben Amorim knows it is not the ideal time to throw Manchester United's young players into the firing line, but he admits there could be "surprises" in their lineup against Wolves.
United kept their hopes of winning silverware in Amorim's debut season alive on Thursday, mounting an unbelievable comeback to beat Lyon 7-6 on aggregate in the Europa League quarter-finals.
After that game, Amorim conceded United may now have to prioritise their European campaign, given they are already guaranteed to record their lowest-ever Premier League points tally.
And the likes of Ayden Heaven, Harry Amass and Chido Obi-Martin could now be in line to appear at Old Trafford on Sunday.
"I think it is not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play, because they need a strong base to really show what they can do," Amorim said.
"But in this moment, we need to do it and sometimes you have surprises. Ayden just played and to be honest, we did it because we had injuries in that moment.
"But today, I think Ayden is my player so when he is ready to face the competition in the team, he is ready to play. So you don't know.
"It is a difficult moment, it is not the right moment for the kids to play, but if we have to do it then we will do it."
When Vitor Pereira took charge of Wolves in December, they were 13 points behind United in the table, but a win on Sunday would draw them level with the Red Devils.
Wolves have won their last four Premier League games, their best top-flight winning run since January 1972.
They last had a longer winning streak in the top division between September and October 1970 (six in a row), and Pereira does not believe his players will let-up.
"After the game against Ipswich, I felt the team were a little bit relaxed, but just for one day, in one training," Pereira said. "We had a conversation, and we corrected the feeling.
"This week, I didn't feel that. The team is committed. They know that we have a lot of work to do and the work is not done.
"We have a lot of points to fight for because we are ambitious. We have a team with ambition, and I believe that we'll compete in every game until the end.
"Our ambition is to do our best. To fight every time for the three points, to compete when we are defending, when we are attacking, and to respect our identity every time."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Manchester United – Alejandro Garnacho
Garnacho has scored two goals across his last four Premier League appearances for United, as many as he had in his previous 23.
The Argentinian has never scored in consecutive games in the competition, but he has a chance to accomplish that feat after netting in last week's 4-1 loss at Newcastle United.
Wolves – Matheus Cunha
Cunha, who has been touted as a potential transfer target for United, marked his return from suspension with the clinching goal in last week's 4-2 win over Tottenham.
He has scored 14 Premier League goals for Wolves this term, with Raul Jimenez the only player with more in a single season for the club (17 in 2019-20).
He could become the third Brazilian player with 15 goals in a season, along with Roberto Firmino in 2017-18 for Liverpool and Gabriel Martinelli in 2022-23 for Arsenal.
MATCH PREDICTION – MANCHESTER UNITED WIN
Man Utd have lost 14 Premier League games this season, equalling their total from last campaign. They last lost more league games in 1989-90 (16).
On 38 points and with six games to go, they are guaranteed their lowest points total in the Premier League era even if they end the season on a six-game winning run, with 58 in 2021-22 their current lowest.
While Wolves may fancy their chances after seeing United play 120 dramatic minutes just three days ago, the buoyed Red Devils are favourites.
They have lost just one of their last 13 home league games against Wolves (W9 D3), going down 1-0 in January 2022 under Ralf Rangnick.
United have also won all four of their home league games played on Easter Sunday by an aggregate score of 9-1. Meanwhile, this is Wolves' first ever league match played on the day.
