Gordon might have already played last Newcastle game, hints Howe
Anthony Gordon has impressed for Newcastle United this season, but there is a chance he will never pull the shirt on again.
Eddie Howe admitted Anthony Gordon may have already played his last game for Newcastle United as speculation around his future continues to grow.
Bayern Munich are reportedly in advanced negotiations to sign Gordon, who has sat out Newcastle's last four games – the first two of those due to a hip injury.
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton in January 2023 and has made 152 appearances in all competitions for them, scoring 39 goals in the process.
This season, he has made 46 appearances and scored 17 goals, more than any of his team-mates. His 22 goal involvements (also five assists) are also a team high for the Magpies.
Gordon also netted a hat-trick (four goals) in the Champions League against Qarabag – it was the earliest from the start of a match by an English player in the competition.
Newcastle still have a slim chance of clinching a European place for next season, but Gordon is likely to play no part in their final two games, starting against West Ham on Sunday.
Asked if he was not using Gordon because he had one eye on the future, Howe said: "When you get to this stage of the season, part of what we will be doing we'll be looking to next year, naturally, so yes.
"Anthony's just come back from injury. I think the team has played well in his absence and with a partial view to the future, yes."
Asked if there was any update on the speculation over Gordon's potential switch to the Allianz Arena, Howe added: "No, nothing, no updates from me. These are discussions that potentially might be happening, but not with me."
Fabian Schar is another player who may have already stepped out in a Newcastle shirt for the last time.
The defender, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has been an integral figure for Newcastle since joining in 2023, but reports suggest he will miss the final two matches, having been sidelined with an ankle injury since January.
