Man Utd have got 'a lot worse' under Amorim – Neville
Manchester United have lost five home league games under Ruben Amorim, and Gary Neville says things will get worse before they get better.
Manchester United have got "a lot worse" under new boss Ruben Amorim, who must inspire some positive results to keep players on board with his methods.
That is the view of former United right-back Gary Neville, who has been shocked by the Red Devils' plight under the former Sporting CP coach.
On Sunday, United were beaten 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace, a result that left them 13th in the Premier League, closer to the relegation zone (12 points) to the top four (14).
They have now lost seven of their 13 home league matches this season, their joint-most at this stage of any league campaign, along with 1893-94 (also seven in 13).
Amorim, meanwhile, has lost five of his seven Premier League games at Old Trafford. That is more home defeats than Jose Mourinho suffered in two-and-a-half years as United boss (4 in 46 games) and as many as Louis van Gaal recorded in two seasons at the helm (5/38).
Amorim has lost 71.43% of his home games in charge of United in the competition – no other permanent Red Devils boss has lost more than 23.6% (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer).
United have only taken 14 points from 13 league games under the Portuguese overall, and Neville thinks more pain could be in store between now and the end of the season.
"I thought it would get better when Ruben Amorim came in, the enthusiasm of him and the new system, the players would buy into it and we'd see a bounce," he told the Gary Neville Podcast.
"But we've seen the absolute opposite and it's got a lot worse – and that's surprising.
"There's going to be a lot more pain towards the end of the season and it's going to be damaging – because they're obviously going to stick with Amorim."
While Neville expects the Jim Ratcliffe regime to be patient with Amorim, he is wary of the fact players could turn on the coach if his methods do not bring results.
"The more you lose, the more difficult it is for the manager to convince the players of his idea," Neville added. "He said, 'I will not change my idea', and you need the players to buy into that.
"If they keep losing and they keep getting criticised and the spotlight comes on them more and the fans are unhappy, it creates a feeling and you can't keep losing.
"You just can't. It will depress the thoughts of the players to a point whereby they'll start to lose faith in the idea, and it'll damage you.
"He can't change his approach now because he's died in the ditch on it and rightly so. But he's lost more games at Manchester United than he lost in the last 75 at Sporting, which is just absolutely alarming, so he will not be enjoying this.
"It can't keep going on as it is, and they somehow have to start playing better. At this moment in time, it's a very sorry situation when you watch United play."
