Dortmund sacks Sahin after seven months
Borussia Dortmund has sacked head coach Nuri Sahin after its 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Bologna.
The defeat meant Dortmund lost back-to-back UEFA Champions League matches in the same season for the first time since November 2021.
Meanwhile, the German side has lost multiple games after scoring the opening goal for the first time in a single edition of the European competition.
The Loss to Bologna also marked a fourth consecutive defeat in all competitions, something that has only happened to Dortmund between March and April 2000, when it lost six in a row, within the past 30 years, forcing the club to take action.
Dortmund has also struggled domestically. It is 10th in the Bundesliga and seven points adrift of the top four, while it is 20 points behind leader Bayern Munich after 18 games of the season.
It was also beaten in the second round of the DFB-Pokal by Wolfsburg in October 2024.
Sahin was appointed as the club's head coach in June last year, taking over from Edin Terzic, whose final game in charge came in the UEFA Champions League final, a game it lost 2-0 against Real Madrid at Wembley.
The 36-year-old oversaw 27 games in all competitions, winning 12 matches, drawing four and losing 11. He ended his time at the club he made 227 appearances for as a player with a win percentage of just 44.44.
Of Dortmund managers to have taken charge of more than 20 games in the past 10 years, only Peter Bosz (1.25) averaged fewer points per game than Sahin (1.48).
"Borussia Dortmund has released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments," a club statement read.
Dortmund is next in action this weekend when it takes on Werder Bremen at the Westfalenstadion, a side that is a point and a place above it in the Bundesliga.
