Kane helps Bayern extend Bundesliga lead
Harry Kane scored his 17th league goal of the season the opening goal as Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich secured a nervous 2-1 victory at Freiburg to move six points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.
With champion Bayer Leverkusen held to a 2-2 draw at RB Leipzig, Vincent Kompany’s side was able to increase its advantage at the top of the table thanks to goals from Kane and defender Kim Min-jae.
Bayern, which is on 48 points, lost 3-0 to Feyenoord in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, but started well against Freiburg, hitting the post through Jamal Musiala.
Bundesliga top scorer Kane then put his side in front after 15 minutes, making a quick turn on the edge of the box and sending a low drive into the net.
Kim headed in at the near post from a corner nine minutes after the restart to make it a two-goal advantage before Freiburg pulled a goal back in the 68th minute through Matthias Ginter's header.
Bayern was able to hold on for a fifth straight league victory – matching its best winning streak of the season – despite having only attempted seven shots, its lowest total in a top-flight match this season.
Freiburg has now lost three in a row and dropped to ninth on the standings, with this poor run coming after it had only been beaten twice in its eight previous Bundesliga games.
With Eric Dier setting up Kane for the opener, the duo became the first English players to combine with each other for a goal in the Bundesliga since Opta records began in the 2004-2005 season.
It's been a good start to the new year for Kane, with Bayern winning all four of its league matches in 2025 and the striker contributing three goals and an assist as part of that run.
