Kovac focused on Champions League after collecting first Bundesliga win
Niko Kovac claimed his first league win as Borussia Dortmund boss on Saturday, but he was not getting carried away with celebrating.
Niko Kovac was delighted to earn his first Bundesliga win in charge of Borussia Dortmund but insisted they would not get carried away, with their focus on upcoming matches.
Dortmund cruised to a 6-0 victory over Union Berlin on Saturday, with Serhou Guirassy scoring four goals. Maximilian Beier was also on target after an opening own goal from Diogo Leite.
Pascal Gross also got a quartet of assists, setting up three of Guirassy's goals. He is the third player since 2004-05 to collect four assists in a Bundesliga match after Christopher Nkunku in February 2020 for RB Leipzig at Schalke and Szbabolcs Huszti in September 2012 for Hannover in Wolfsburg.
Kovac was winless in 13 Bundesliga matches (11 with Wolfsburg) before Saturday, with this victory ending his longest-ever drought without a win as a coach.
But, having finally earned his first three points in the league after starting with two losses, Kovac is already thinking of how they can use this result as a springboard.
"First and foremost, I am happy that we won a league game now and in a way that I liked," Kovac, who took over in late January, told a press conference.
"I am totally unimportant because I am part of the team. We won't be celebrating in a big way. We won a league game and that's it.
"We have big matches coming up in the league and the Champions League and that's where the focus is.
"We were a bit slow to start but after the first 15 minutes, we found our way into the game and the own goal settled our nerves."
It was the first time in Guirassy's club career that he netted four times in a single match, while he is just the third Dortmund player this millennium after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Erling Haaland to do so in a Bundesliga match.
He contributed to eight of Dortmund's 24 attempts on Saturday, scoring with all four efforts on target as he accumulated 2.76 expected goals (xG).
Serhou Guirassy (on Sky): "[It was] a perfect evening, a great game," Guirassy told Sky Sports. "It was the first time I've scored four goals in a game.
"We knew we had to win this kind of game to bounce back. It was an important win for the team. We have to keep going like this."
