Boro hammered as Stoke runs riot at Riverside
Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough was given an absolute thrashing by Stoke City as the hosts bowed meekly out of the Carabao Cup at the second round stage with a 5-0 defeat.
The Potters went ahead in the 14th minute through Emre Tezgel, and while the scoreline remained 1-0 to the visitors at the break, Boro completely imploded in the second half.
Ryan Mmaee got Stoke's second on 57 minutes and just three minutes later the visitors bagged a third through Lewis Koumas.
Five minutes after that, Milton Manhoef made it four for Stoke, and he grabbed his second, and Stoke's fifth, on 69 minutes as things got out of control for Carrick's men.
They did manage not to concede again before the full-time whistle, but there appears to be much work to do for the former Manchester United man if he is to mount a promotion challenge against this season.
