Burnley closes gap on Championship's top two
Burnley moved to within two points of the EFL Championship automatic promotion spots despite conceding its first league goal in 2025 as it won 2-1 at Cardiff City Stadium.
The Clarets' top goalscorer, Josh Brownhill, got things going in the Welsh capital after meeting Hannibal Mejbri's cross to sidefoot home in the 18th minute.
Cardiff continued to ask questions of a Burnley defence that had not conceded in 12 straight league games, with Yousef Salech poking one against the post.
Instead, it was the Clarets who doubled their advantage through Maxime Esteve on 40 minutes, who finished from close range after being found by Zian Flemming's header.
But two minutes later, Burnley's defence was breached for the first time since 22 December (AEDT) in the league – a run spanning 1,132 minutes – with Salech heading Cardiff back into the match.
In the second half, it was Cardiff that looked the more threatening, with Burnley surviving a wave of pressure and arguably lucky not to concede an equaliser after a late Will Fish chance flashed across goal.
But the visitors hung on, putting pressure on Sheffield United and Leeds United above them. Cardiff, meanwhile, are fourth-bottom and are five points above the relegation zone.
