After sixth-placed Middlesbrough was beaten by table-topping Leeds United, Frank Lampard's side had the opportunity to leapfrog Boro.
Although it looked like the opportunity was set to pass it by, following a frustrating evening at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
However, in the 94th minute, Jack Rudoni's cross was volleyed in by Paterson to send Lampard and the home faithful into ecstasy.
Elsewhere, Paterson's former club Swansea City heaped further pressure on bottom side Plymouth Argyle with a 3-0 victory in south Wales.
The damage was done during the opening 35 minutes at the Swansea.com Stadium, as the visitor remains five points adrift of safety with five matches remaining.

In the process, Alan Sheehan's side eased its own relegation fears by moving nine points clear of the bottom three.
Queens Park Rangers also put distance between itself and the drop zone with a 3-1 victory over Oxford United.
Ronnie Edwards put the visitor in front at the Kassam Stadium, while Sam Field's deflected strike doubled its lead just before half-time.
Stanley Mills pulled a goal back for Oxford after the break, but Yang Min-hyeok sealed all three points for the Rs deep into stoppage time.
QPR is seven points clear of danger and four ahead of the host side, nervously looking over its shoulder.
