Sorloth double helps ease Atleti into quarters
Atletico Madrid booked its place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals with a comfortable 4-0 win over 10-man Elche.
It extended its winning streak to 15 games in the process, the longest such run in the club's history, with Alexander Sorloth the orchestrator as he got Diego Simeone's men off to a quick start.
The Norwegian opened the scoring in the eighth minute, netting Atletico's earliest goal in the Copa del Rey this season, as he struck a loose ball from close range.
He then extended the lead shortly before the half-hour mark. Bambo Diaby fouled Samuel Lino in the box, and Sorloth made no mistake from 12 yards, sending it past Miguel San Roman.
Elche was reduced to 10 men just five minutes into the second half when Nico Mercau received a second booking, this one a tactical foul on Rodrigo Riquelme.
The Spaniard would then go on to score the first, hitting the back of the net with a brilliant long-range strike just 11 minutes later before Julian Alvarez, his replacement, wrapped up the win 15 minutes from time with a quick finish.
In the build-up to this match, Simeone said he was hopeful that Sortloth could deliver more, despite an impressive start to life at Atletico.
The Norwegian has already scored eight goals in LaLiga, and added another two to his tally in all competitions here with calm finishing.
