Guimaraes: 'Isak is the best striker around'
Bruno Guimaraes claims Alexander Isak is "the best striker around" after he inspired Newcastle United's EFL Cup semi-final win over Arsenal.
Alexander Isak is "the best striker around", according to Newcastle United team-mate Bruno Guimaraes.
Isak starred as the Magpies sealed their place in the Carabao Cup final by beating Arsenal 2-0 on Wednesday, sealing a 4-0 aggregate victory.
The Swede smashed the post with a powerful strike that bounced out to Jacob Murphy to give Newcastle the lead at St James' Park, having already had the ball in the net with a brilliant finish only to be flagged offside.
He continued to give Arsenal's centre-back pairing William Saliba and Gabriel a torrid evening – and Guimaraes heaped praise on his performance.
The Brazilian said: "For me, he's the best striker around.
"Nobody is performing better than him. We are lucky to have him and I hope he can keep it going."
Eddie Howe has led his side to their second Carabao Cup final in three seasons, more than they managed in their first 62 participations in the competition (one in 1975-76).
Newcastle now have full focus on going one better than in 2023 when they were beaten 2-0 by Manchester United at Wembley.
The Magpies have not won silverware since 1955, losing three FA Cup finals and two EFL Cup finals in that time.
Guimaraes added: "It would be a dream to lift a trophy and put my name in the club's history.
"It would be amazing in my first season as captain."
