Bournemouth held at Palace as Euro charge stalls
Bournemouth missed a great chance to apply more pressure on the European places as it was held to a goalless draw by 10-man Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
The spoils were shared at Selhurst Park, where a general lack of quality in both penalty areas was the story of the encounter.
Palace had to play more than half the contest with a numerical disadvantage, after Chris Richards was dismissed for a second yellow card offence in first-half stoppage-time.
Nevertheless, Bournemouth was unable to capitalise while having the extra man, with the breakthrough ultimately eluding both sides.
The Cherries stay eighth while, Palace remains five points behind Andoni Iraola's side in 12th.
Oliver Glasner hailed the character of his Palace side after it earned a draw a man light.
The Eagles had conceded 10 goals in their previous two matches after heavy defeats away to Manchester City and Newcastle United, but were able to hang on here.
"I was absolutely pleased with this point especially the way the game was going and conceding 10 goals in the previous two games," Glasner said.
"To have to play for 50 minutes with one player less, it's a great clean sheet."
Only Arsenal has received more red cards in the Premier League this season than Palace, five to four, while it is Palace's joint-most sending offs across a single campaign in the competition alongside 2014-2015.
It has received three red cards across its past four top-flight games, as many dismissals as in its previous 80 matches.
But Glasner criticised the decision to send Richards off, arguing that Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott also deserved the same fate for a foul he had committed while on a yellow card.
The Palace boss said: "For me, it's how you lead the game and consistency.
"It's either two red cards – one for Chris Richards and one for Alex Scott. Or it's no red cards at all.
"When you don't show a second yellow for Scott, you don't show a second yellow for Richards."
Iraola was left frustrated that his Bournemouth team failed to make its numerical advantage count.
"Before the game it wouldn't have been a bad point but considering we were playing against 10 for more than 45 minutes it's disappointing," he said.
"We didn't have the creativity and you have to be super creative or shoot from very far. We couldn't find the chances.
"We still have five games to add more points," Iraola added. "It feels like a missed opportunity but we're still in the hunt for Europe."
