Mbeumo and Wissa keep Brentford's dream alive
Brentford kept its European dream alive as Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa inspired a 4-2 Premier League win over 10-man Brighton and Hove Albion at Gtech Community Stadium.
Mbeumo netted the opener inside 10 minutes with a right-footed finish, before Brighton equalised on the stroke of half-time with Danny Welbeck's smart header.
Brentford moved into a new gear after the break, with Mbeumo scoring again when his left-footed effort took a decisive deflection off Lewis Dunk and nestled in the corner.
The Cameroon international then turned provider, teeing up Wissa for a third, before Joao Pedro was sent off for lashing out at Nathan Collins after a tussle for the ball.
Kaoru Mitoma did slot home in the 81st minute and looked to be setting up an unlikely comeback, but Brighton rarely threatened a leveller.
In the end, it was the Bees that scored the sixth goal of the game when Christian Norgaard nodded home a stoppage-time free-kick.
The game ended on an even more concerning note for Seagulls boss Fabian Hurzeler as Jan Paul van Hecke was taken off the field on a stretcher after a serious head collision with Yunus Konak.
Brentford remains 11th but is now just two points behind 10th-placed Brighton, which could have moved up to eighth with a win.
Brentford boss Thomas Frank was full of praise for attackers Mbeumo and Wissa after the duo's inspired display.
“All praise to the two of them for the hard work, how much they push," he said.
“Then, of course, to my staff and the way we play. When you consistently over the last six seasons have produced top scorers, there must be something we're doing right.
“It was a very big win. I said before the game to the players, just win. Of course, I hope to win every game and we try to win every game. But it's always about performances first and foremost, and that's what we have done consistently.”
Hurzeler faced some dissenting chants from the Brighton fans when he replaced goalscorer Welbeck in the second half.
“That is fine if they [the fans] have their opinion," he said.
“I wanted to have more midfielders on the pitch to control the game more. I think the team played well after that. We scored the second goal, we had a big chance with Kaoru to make the third goal.
“We had the penalty situation with Lewis [Dunk] so there were a lot of positive things after the subs.”
