West Ham salvages a point against Brighton
Mohammed Kudus rescued a point for West Ham United as they played out a 1-1 draw with Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League.
The Hammers remain without a win from eight Premier League meetings with the Seagulls at London Stadium, and could have been dealt another defeat late on.
Mats Wieffer volleyed home his first Brighton goal to put Fabian Hurzeler’s side ahead in the 51st minute, but Kudus restored parity just before the hour mark.
West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski preserved a point for his side in second-half stoppage-time, producing a brilliant save from close range to deny substitute Yasin Ayari.
There is no change in the table for either side. West Ham remains 14th on 20 points, five fewer than Brighton, which stays ninth after missing the chance to move as high as sixth.
Brighton has now failed to win any of its past 11 Premier League games in London.
Meanwhile, for the first time this season, West Ham has picked up a point after conceding the first goal in a home Premier League match.
A disappointed Hurzeler conceded it was two points lost for his Brighton side, which has failed to keep a clean sheet in its past nine games.
"I think it's two points lost in the end, because there were plenty of big chances," Hurzeler said. "We weren't able to score, and we weren't able to keep a clean sheet.
"Then, we got punished for that one mistake. In the end, it was our fault that we didn't leave the pitch as winners.
"There were positive things, but we also need to get the result to get out of this circle of bad experiences. It's business to get results if you want to achieve something.
"We have to get our higher standards back. We can defend better. We have to keep going, and we have to trust the process."
Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui saluted his side's character, meanwhile, after it came from behind to earn a point.
"We have to highlight the commitment and the behaviour of the players," he said.
"[They showed those characteristics] until the end. We achieved one point - we wanted three - but we have to look forward to the next challenge.
"I think that we were better in the first half, then maybe, in the second half, they were better in some moments.
"We showed a good reaction to their goal. Not only to get the equaliser, but afterwards, we kept this reaction. We had 15 very good minutes after we levelled the match. We could have scored the second goal, but they recovered, and they had chances, too."
