Slot will lean on Liverpool's title winners for Premier League run-in
Arne Slot was confident he could lean on Liverpool's Premier League title winners as they begin their run-in at Aston Villa on Wednesday.
Arne Slot intends to use the experience of his squad's title-winning experience to help Liverpool in their Premier League run-in.
Liverpool travel to Aston Villa on Wednesday, hoping to build on their 2-1 win over Wolves last Sunday and build a 10-point gap to Arsenal in the standings.
But there were signs of nerves after the break at Anfield, with the Reds failing to attempt a shot in an entire half of a Premier League home match for the very first time.
Slot, however, said that despite the questions surrounding the squad, he said he will lean on the players who were involved in Liverpool's title success back in 2019-20.
Of those that still remain from their first Premier League title win in 30 years under Jurgen Klopp, Slot has plenty of experience to turn to in his side.
Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Andrew Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah were all part of that squad five years ago.
"We lean a lot on the players. We train with them, we try to prepare them. We have a pre-match meeting to try to prepare them in the best possible way," Slot said.
"You lean on the players - how much work-rate they want to put in, how well they execute the game plan, how do they adapt to what the other team does?
"I think it helps you if a team or a player has already won something but don't make that too big because you still have to play for it."
But Slot did not understate the task ahead of his team, despite having a formidable record on the road since arriving at Liverpool at the start of the season.
Indeed, the Reds are yet to lose a Premier League away game under Slot, with his 13 games (W9 D4) the outright longest unbeaten start on the road by any manager in the competition's history, surpassing the record set by John Gregory with Villa of 12 games from March to November 1998.
Unai Emery's side were also held by 10-man Ipswich Town in their last Premier League encounter, and sit ninth in the table after 25 games of their campaign.
"I see it as 13 games to be played and the next game as the most important one. Villa away, like Wolves at home, is again a difficult game," Slot said.
"They have a great home record, maybe even more when they play in the evening, so we know that is going to be a challenge.
"But we have quite an OK away record this season. We have done quite OK this season in general as well, so it is a game for everyone to look forward to."
Villa have also won just one of their last 14 Premier League games against Liverpool (D2 L11), a 7-2 victory at Villa Park in October 2020, but this exact fixture finished 3-3 last season – the Reds haven't failed to win consecutive away league games against the Villans since December 2004.
