Fiorentina back on track after gritty win at Lazio
Fiorentina held on to claim a 2-1 victory away at Lazio in Serie A and put its Champions League qualification push back on track while denting its opponent's hopes in the process.
La Viola moved back into the top six, three points within fourth-placed Lazio, and replaced AC Milan in sixth spot after the Rossoneri's earlier 3-2 win over Parma.
Fiorentina has a game in hand over all the teams above it except second-placed Inter Milan, and started well at Stadio Olimpico when Yacine Adli fired home in the 11th minute.
Lucas Beltran made it 2-0 barely six minutes later with a header and it would have been 3-0 before the break had it not been for the woodwork, Albert Gudmundsson hitting the post in the 34th minute.
Just after the hour, Adli was shown a red card moments after being substituted for kicking the ball away, his second yellow card offence, and will be suspended as a result of some pointless petulance.
Lazio scored in stoppage-time through Adam Marusic setting up a nervous last few minutes, and the hosts almost stole a point in the 98th minute when Pedro fired a crisp shot towards goal, but it hit the right-hand post and rebounded tantalisingly along the goalline as Fiorentina hearts stopped momentarily.
The victory eventually came, though, as was Fiorentina's first in 2025 having gone on a run of five games without a win in Serie A since beating Bologna on 16 December last year.
The result also puts it firmly back in the picture for UEFA Champions League qualification.
