Solskjaer named Besiktas head coach
Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has landed his first managerial role since departing Old Trafford in November 2021, confirmed as Besiktas head coach.
The Norwegian has put pen to paper on an 18-month contract with the Turkish Super Lig side, with the option of extending the deal for the 2026-2027 season.
It is the 51-year-old's first managerial position since his departure from Old Trafford in November 2021, as he replaces Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who left in November, at Tupras Stadyumu.
Solskjaer takes over with Besiktas sixth in the Turkish Super Lig table – 21 points adrift of leader Galatasaray.
"We believe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make significant contributions to our club, and we warmly welcome him to the Besiktas family, wishing him great success," a statement from the Istanbul club read.
A two-time title winner at Molde, with whom he had two spells, Solskjaer also briefly managed Cardiff City, before initially taking charge of Manchester United on an interim basis in December 2018.
The former Red Devils striker, who won six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League as a player between 1996 and 2007, was given the job permanently three months later.
He oversaw 168 games in charge of United in all competitions, boasting a 54.17 per cent win rate (won 91). In the Premier League, he averaged 1.81 points per game.
He guided the club to a second-place Premier League finish and the UEFA Europa League final during the 2020-2021 season, before a slump in form saw him depart a few months later.
