Madrid to face City in Champions League play-offs
Defending champion Real Madrid will face Manchester City in a blockbuster UEFA Champions League play-off clash for a spot in the Round of 16.
Madrid finished one point below the automatic qualification places in the league table in 11th, while City came back to seal a 3-1 win over Club Brugge on the final day to edge its way into the play-offs, finishing 22nd.
City will have the home advantage in the first leg and has won four of its previous 12 meetings with Madrid in the competition.
However, Madrid has knocked an English club out of the UEFA Champions League knockout stages 13 times.
Under the new format, clubs from the same country can face each other in the play-off, with Brest and Paris Saint-Germain drawn against each other in an all-French tie in Friday's draw.
Juventus and AC Milan avoided a clash at this stage and will face Dutch clubs PSV and Feyenoord respectively.
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich, which also narrowly missed out on an automatic qualification spot despite winning its final game, will face Celtic, with the first leg taking place in Glasgow.
Borussia Dortmund, now under the leadership of former Bayern head coach Niko Kovac, comes up against Sporting CP.
The other two ties in the play-offs will see Club Brugge, which qualified despite defeat to City, host Atalanta in the first leg, while Benfica travels to Monaco.
The first leg of the play-off will take place on 12 and 13 February (AEDT), with the second leg happening the next week on 19 and 20 February (AEDT). The draw for the Round 16, which will include the teams that finished in the top eight, will take place on 21 February.
