Aussie rising star seals Bayern Munich move
Six months after beIN SPORTS broke the news that Bayern Munich was in advanced talks to sign Adelaide United rising star Nestory Irankunda, the Bundesliga club's youth team confirmed a deal has been struck for the precociously-talented Tanzania-born attacker.
beIN first reported news of Bayern's interest in Irankunda in May, with the then just-turned 17 year-old to be loaned back to Adelaide United for the 23-24 A-Leagues Men season.
An announcement stalled as talks between the two parties became protracted, before the Bundesliga giant posted on X on Wednesday that Irankunda will link up with the club's under-19 team from 1 July, 2024.
“We have had Nestory on our radar for some time and are pleased that we have reached an agreement with him and Adelaide United about a move to Munich next summer," Jochen Sauer, Bayern's Director of Youth Development, said. "We would like to thank those responsible at United for the always good discussions.
"Nestory is an extremely fast wing player, good at dribbling and finishing and with a lot of power towards the goal. We are convinced of his potential and that he will take the next steps with us."
Irankunda, already capped at senior level for the Socceroos, is not the first fleet-footed A-League star to be snapped up by the defending Bundesliga champion.
In 2019, New Zealand international Sarpreet Singh signed a three-year deal at Bayern, having starred in the A-League for Wellington Phoenix. Singh made two senior team appearances and 38 appearances for Bayern Munich 2 in a stint that included loans at Jahn Regensburg and FC Nurnberg.
This season the 24 year-old secured a move to 2.Bundesliga club Hansa Rostock, where he's made four starts.
