West Brom ends Stoke's run to claim big away win
West Bromwich Albion scuppered the chance of Stoke City joining Middlesbrough on maximum points in the EFL Championship, claiming a 1-0 win to maintain its own unbeaten start to the season.
Potters’ goalkeeper Viktor Johansson was at fault for West Brom's winner, fumbling the ball from a corner, which allowed Nat Phillips to prod into the back of the net in the 14th minute.
The Swedish goalkeeper’s mistake proved to be the game’s decisive moment, as Ryan Mason’s positive start as Albion’s boss saw it move up to second on the table, having remained unbeaten in its opening four games.
West Brom has now picked up five wins in its past seven league trips to Stoke – one draw and one defeat – with four of those victories decided by just a single goal.
