Coventry punishes 10-man West Brom with comeback win
Coventry City came back from 2-0 down to beat 10-man West Bromwich Albion in a breathless Midlands derby at CBS Arena to stay top of the EFL Championship table.
The Baggies took full control of thegame in atrocious wet conditions with two strikes from Aune Heggebo that were almost identical in their nature.
But Coventry ploughed on, creating opportunities for fun, and it was only a matter of time until one was pounced on, and it was Josh Eccles that did so, heading home an inviting Tatsuhiro Sakamoto cross to make it 2-1 at the break.
West Brom did their hosts a huge favour four minutes after half-time when Jayson Molumby was sent off for his second yellow card.
That was all the encouragement Frank Lampard's side needed to taje advantage, with two goals inside five minutes earning a third consecutive victory and an 11th win in 16 league games this season.
Ellis Simms levelled with close-range header and Victor Torp's beautifully controlled volley bounced down and past keeper Josh Griffiths to earn all three points.
"You're going to get tested, you can't play this many games in a season and have it all your own way, or not expect a team like West Brom to have the quality to capitalise on moments," Lampard said after the game.
"I think we fully deserved it in the end, and from being 2-0 down, that shows the level of resilience in the group.
"I believed at half-time that we wouldn't lose the game against 11 because of the way we finished the first half, Josh's goal was great for him from not having played so much.
"And it was Josh's turn which gets the second clear yellow card, which was a red - a shame for them but at the same time it was good play from us, but then you've got to deal with 10 men which is a challenge because they sink, but we gave them real problems because we moved the ball to the sides great and did everything we wanted to do."
Lampard's side is now seven points clear at the top with 37 points, with West Brom stuck in 17th on 21.
