Botta's belter sparks Talleres victory over Lima
A sensational goal from Ruben Botta put Talleres Cordoba on the path to victory in its Copa Libertadores Group D clash against Alianza Lima as a 2-0 win moved it above the Peruvian side and off the bottom of the table.
Botta received the ball from a quick free-kick just inside the Alianza Lima half on 23 minutes, and smashed a shot into the back of the net from 30 yards out to put the hosts in front.
Valentin Depietri then scored in the 38th minute from a tight angle to make it 2-0 before half-time, and things looked just about perfect for Talleres's long-suffering fans.
Minutes later, the visitors were awarded a penalty, but Paolo Guerrero saw his attempt saved by Javier Burrai, who dived to his left and held on to the rebound.
Talleres and Lima have four points each with one match left to play in the group stage..
While both sides are out of contention in the Libertadores, one of them could continue in CONMEBOL competition via the Copa Sudamericana by finishing third in the group, a fate that will be decided by results on the last round of group fixtures.
