Chelsea goalkeeper Martinez hopes for quick return after sustaining fractured jaw

  • Having suffered a nasty jaw injury against Everton, Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery and will be sidelined for several games.

Emiliano Martinez hopes to return to action in "a few weeks" after fracturing his jaw during Chelsea's Premier League win over Everton.

Saturday's game at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, which the Blues won 2-0 following Pedro Neto's brace, was paused for eight minutes in the second half for Martinez to receive medical treatment.

Following a nasty clash of heads with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, Martinez was taken straight to hospital.

Mike Penders took Martinez's place from the bench, and after Chelsea confirmed that their first-choice goalkeeper had undergone successful surgery on a fractured jaw, the 21-year-old Belgian is likely to enjoy a run in the team.

Chelsea face Tottenham, Manchester United and Sunderland in the Premier League prior to the next international break, in addition to an EFL Cup tie away at Liverpool.

Alongside an image of himself in a hospital bed, Martinez wrote on Instagram: "Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well.

"The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we'll be back."

Since joining Chelsea from Aston Villa this summer, Martinez has conceded 11 goals in six appearances in all competitions, and he is yet to see out a single clean sheet.
