Yildiz strike gives Tudor winning start at Juvetus
Kenan Yildiz scored the only goal to give Juventus a winning start to life under Igor Tudor as it edged out Genoa 1-0 at Allianz Stadium.
The Bianconeri moved back to within a point of fourth-placed Bologna, which was also a 1-0 victor at Venezia earlier in the day.
Tudor, who was a two-time Serie A winner with Juve during his playing career, replaced Thiago Motta during the international break after the former manager oversaw heavy defeats against Atalanta and Fiorentina, which came off the back of the club's exits from the UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia.
Morten Frendrup went close with a volley early on for the visitors before the hosts took the lead in the 25th minute.
Yildiz drove into the box and skipped away from a challenge, before firing past Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali from a tight angle.
Patrick Vieira's Genoa sought a response after the break, but the closest it came to equalising was when Andrea Pinamonti volleyed wide in the 54th minute.
Timothy Weah should have put the result to bed in stoppage-time, but scuffed his effort straight at Leali after a counter-attack.
Nevertheless, the single goal was enough to get Juventus back to winning ways, and the best possible start for Tudor.
"It was important to start with a victory, for everyone. Many players had a good game, this is positive," the new coach said after the game.
"I noticed that there is a lot of room for improvement, this will make us start the week well which will be the first full week. We have to work hard."
Tudor was a popular appointment with supporters pleased to see a change and even happier that a former Juve player, who spent most of his playing career at the Turin club, is now in charge and they chanted his name before kick-off.
"I heard the chants of the fans and it was emotional," Tudor, who become the first Juve coach to win his first match in charge having taken over during a season since Ciro Ferrara in 2009, said.
"But the victory is more beautiful than these emotions. This was important for the fans. It was nice, but I was focused because it was important to start in the right way."
Juve is one point behind fourth-placed Bologna as it bids for a UEFA Champions League spot.
"It was a good goal, one of my best, hopefully I can score normal goals too. We are happy now, we're a good squad and worked hard," matchwinner Yildiz said.
"I thank Motta, we did all we could with him. The new coach brought fresh energy."
