Gasperini vents after Roma is thrashed by Cardiff
Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini was quick to demand more signings after watching his side go down 4-1 against EFL Championship side Cardiff City in a pre-season friendly.
Roma has made three signings in the current transfer windwo, although only one of them is a new face – Santiago Castro, who joined from Bologna for €35 million ($57.4 million).
Donyell Malen and Daniele Ghilardi both made their loan spells permanent, but Roma still has plenty of work to do to strengthen its squad if it is to challenge for trophies in the upcoming season.
Roma qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2017–2018 season, and Gasperini highlighted the need for at least four more additions before the season begins.
"The transfer market just really got going now due to the World Cup, but clearly I expect something from here on in," Gasperini said.
"We lost a lot of players and anyone can see this squad needs to be completed. We will certainly need to bring in some players to make it a competitive team.
"At this moment, we’ve got three midfielders out, some players just arrived, others aren’t ready yet.
"Compared to last term, I asked for a defender, a winger, and two strikers. Of course, if a player leaves, then he has to be replaced too.
"This was my objective, it doesn’t seem so difficult or insurmountable to me."
Roma has friendlies lined up against Newport County, Brighton and Hove Albion and Borussia Dortmund before the start of its Serie A campaign on 25 August (AEST) against Fiorentina, which came back from 2-0 down to drew 2-2 with Real Madrid in its most recent friendly.
