Slegers revels in 'euphoria' of stunning Champions League fightback
Arsenal forged another exceptional comeback in the Women's Champions League, as they defeated Lyon 4-1 away from home to reach the final.
Renee Slegers revelled in a euphoric moment for Arsenal after her team's extraordinary comeback against Lyon in the Women's Champions League.
Arsenal stunned the home crowd at Groupama Stadium on Sunday with an emphatic 4-1 win, which sealed a 5-3 aggregate victory to send the Gunners into the final.
Slegers' team will take on holders Barcelona in the final, as they aim to win the competition for a second time, having done so back in 2007. The Gunners remain the only English team to have won a European title.
An own goal from Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler got Arsenal off to a flying start, and when Mariona Caldentey and then Alessia Russo netted either side of half-time, the visitors were in dreamland.
Caitlin Foord made it 5-2 on aggregate just after the hour, with Melchie Dumornay's late attempt nothing but a consolation for Lyon, who have won the Champions League a record eight times.
"We were unbelievable in a high-pressure moment against a top opponent," said Slegers, as quoted by BBC Sport.
"How calm we were – there's so much work put into this game, I'm so happy.
"Delighted for everyone. It's euphoria, such a special moment. So happy and we need to celebrate these special moments but also stay humble and we get ready for the next one."
Arsenal's previous European success came as part of a historic quadruple 18 years ago.
"I remember back then there were very few role models, I couldn't watch much on football on TV in the Netherlands," said Slegers when asked about Arsenal's glorious moment in 2007.
"I came to England and saw them training and seeing them perform in the Champions League was very inspiring."
Arsenal know the size of the task that awaits them in the final.
Barca have contested five of the past six Champions League finals, winning the trophy on three occasions.
Foord said: "It's going to be a tough game, a final, anything can happen. We look forward to it. It's an exciting moment for us, so we just can't wait to take them on."
Barca thrashed Women's Super League leaders Chelsea 4-1 to complete an 8-2 aggregate victory.
