After losing in the first round at Monte-Carlo and Madrid, former world No.1 Djokovic has shown he can still master the clay courts with sensational week in Switzerland.
“It was the toughest match of the tournament for me so far, three sets,” Djokovic said after beating the Briton in the semi-final.
“[In] the second set, he was a break up and I managed to come back to the tie-break, [I had] a match point, I got a little bit tight there. But I’m really glad how I regrouped in the third and played the best set of the tournament.”
Djokovic has twice come within touching distance of joining Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as the only men in the Open Era to capture 100 or more trophies.
He fell to current world No.1 Jannik Sinner in last year's Shanghai final and was stunned by Jakub Mensik in the Miami Open final in March.
Djokovic will have to get past Hubert Hurkacz if he is to claim a century of titles, and with a 7-0 head-to-head against the Pole, the Serbian great should be confident.
