Aaron Rodgers to Retire? The New York Jets QB Speaks Out
Aaron Rodgers, the 41-year-old veteran quarterback for the New York Jets, has left open the possibility of retiring from the NFL. This Sunday, the player shared that he will take some time to decide whether he wants to continue playing after finishing the 2024 season with his team.
Reflection and Future Decisions
"I need to figure out if I still have the desire to play or if I can rekindle my love for the game. I’ll go home and relax, but I won’t hold anyone up. Tomorrow, I’ll talk to the team to hear what they think, and then we’ll make a decision before it’s too late in the offseason," said Rodgers after his team, the Jets, won 32-20 against the Miami Dolphins in the last game of the regular season.
Though his team had already been eliminated from the playoffs, Rodgers shone with 274 yards and four touchdown passes, becoming the fifth quarterback in NFL history with more than 500 touchdown passes, reaching 503 in his career.
A Disappointing Season
Despite his stellar performance in the final game, Rodgers didn’t hide his frustration with a season where the Jets finished with a 5-12 record. However, he made it clear that this wouldn't directly influence his decision to keep playing.
"The game just ended. I got some hugs in the locker room and shared some emotional moments, but I don’t think it’s wise to make emotional decisions about anything in life. I need time, to step away from this. I feel good at 41, but in any case, I won’t be upset or offended with whatever the Jets decide," the veteran quarterback explained.
His Arrival and Injury
Aaron Rodgers signed with the Jets for the 2023 campaign, creating a lot of buzz. He was expected to be the key player for the team to secure their second Vince Lombardi Trophy in history, the first since Super Bowl III. However, his debut season turned tragic when he tore his Achilles tendon during Week 1, ruling him out for the entire season.
Despite a successful recovery that allowed him to return to the field this season, the team didn’t make the playoffs, and the season ended in disappointment. Rodgers, considered one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history, spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2005 Draft. With the Packers, Rodgers won Super Bowl XLV, was named Super Bowl MVP, and earned four MVP awards for the season.
