Aaron Rodgers Without a Coach: New York Jets fire Robert Saleh
The New York Jets have announced that they’ve let go of their head coach Robert Saleh after last Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 5 of the 2024 NFL season, which was played in London.
Saleh is the first coach to lose his job this season. Jeff Ulbrich, the Jets' defensive coordinator, will step in as interim head coach. The Jets started the season with two wins and three losses, currently sitting second in the AFC East behind the Buffalo Bills, who lead with a 3-2 record.
Saleh got his first shot as a head coach with the Jets, joining them for the 2021 season after a stellar run as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2020. Despite the initial optimism surrounding his arrival in New York, he was never able to lead the Jets to the playoffs in his three full seasons. By the end of his time with the team — three seasons and five weeks into 2024 — his record stood at 20 wins and 36 losses.
On top of that, there have been rumors about a rocky relationship with Aaron Rodgers, the team’s star quarterback. Rodgers tore his Achilles in the very first series of Week 1 during his debut season with the Jets in 2023.
After a long recovery, Rodgers was ready to kick off this season, though he was fined for skipping summer camp to take a vacation in Egypt, a detail Saleh mentioned in a press conference. Their second falling-out came in Week 3, during the Jets’ 24-3 win over the New England Patriots.
After Rodgers threw his second touchdown pass, Saleh went in for a hug, but Rodgers coldly brushed him off with a hand gesture. Saleh downplayed the incident when speaking to the media after the game. Next up, the Jets will take on their division rivals, the Buffalo Bills, in Week 6 on Monday, with both teams battling for the top spot in the AFC East.
