Could Trevor Lawrence’s Season End After Terrifying Hit vs. Texans?
Trevor Lawrence, quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars, suffered a concussion during this Sunday's game against the Houston Texans, which forced him to leave the field—a situation that raised alarms, much like what happened with Tua Tagovailoa and the hit he took with the Miami Dolphins.
Lawrence received a hard illegal hit from linebacker Al-Shaair, who was ejected. The incident occurred during the second quarter of the game played at EverBank Stadium, home of Jacksonville.
According to TV footage, Al-Shaair, instead of trying to avoid contact, collided head-on and struck the quarterback's head. Lawrence was left lying on his back on the grass with his hands rigidly extended forward, a sign of a concussion at that moment.
Could Lawrence's season be over?
On Monday, Doug Pederson commented that the Jaguars would wait for Lawrence to pass the concussion protocol before deciding if he would be sidelined for the rest of the season.
Additionally, Pederson mentioned that Lawrence’s left acromioclavicular (AC) joint, which he injured against the Eagles in Week 9, would factor into the decision, though he clarified that the concussion did not worsen the injury. Last week, Lawrence said he hadn’t ruled out undergoing surgery on his shoulder before the end of the season.
The Jaguars are already without two starting receivers (Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis), and the season is practically over, so they may not want to risk Lawrence’s health any further.
Concussions Lawrence has suffered
This is his second concussion diagnosis with the Jaguars and the third known one from his three-year career at Clemson.
Lawrence suffered a concussion in the Jaguars' loss to Baltimore in Week 15 last December, but he played in the following game against Tampa Bay. He also suffered a concussion against Syracuse during his freshman season at Clemson (2018), but he started the next game against Wake Forest.
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa also suffered a concussion this season, showing the fencing posture. He spent five weeks on the injury reserve list. Tagovailoa has a history of three previous concussions. Depending on the severity of Lawrence’s concussion, the Jaguars might take a similar approach, resting him for the remainder of the season.
NFL suspends Al-Shaair
The NFL announced on Tuesday a three-game unpaid suspension for Azeez Al-Shaair, linebacker of the Houston Texans, for the illegal hit that caused Trevor Lawrence, quarterback of the Jacksonville Jaguars, to suffer a concussion this past Sunday.
"His lack of sportsmanship and respect for football and everyone involved in the game, including players, coaches, and fans, is concerning and does not reflect the core values of the NFL. His continued disregard for NFL game rules puts the health and safety of both himself and his opponents in jeopardy, and that will not be tolerated," stated Jon Runyan, NFL vice president of operations, in a letter to Al-Shaair.
Runyan was the one to announce the suspension of the linebacker for the action that injured the Jaguars quarterback in Week 13 of the season.
In the letter, Jon Runyan reminded the player of the serious consequences of his actions.
"During your game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, you were involved in a play that the league deems unacceptable and a serious violation of game rules. After the illegal hit, you began to fight," the executive wrote.
"The video shows that you hit the head and neck of Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence after he clearly slid feet first. You pushed with your forearm and helmet and delivered a hard blow to the head and neck of your opponent when you had time and space to avoid contact," Runyan emphasized.
