Michael Porter Jr's Surprising Reaction to Getting Traded by Denver Nuggets
Michael Porter Jr. is taking his trade from the Denver Nuggets to the Brooklyn Nets in stride.
The 27-year-old forward, who learned of the deal while on a flight to France, described his reaction as calm and matter-of-fact: “I’m not a super anxious guy. When I found out, I was just like, ‘Well, I’m traded,’ and I took a nap.”
Porter’s relaxed approach quickly drew attention, especially given he is leaving a championship-caliber Nuggets squad for a Nets team in the midst of a rebuild.
Despite leaving the only NBA team he has ever known, Porter expressed gratitude for his time in Denver and optimism about his new chapter. “I love Denver, but I’m excited for this new opportunity,” he told reporters upon joining the Nets at Summer League.
From Third Option to Centerpiece
Porter’s move to Brooklyn signals a dramatic shift in his role. In Denver, he was often the third scoring option behind Nikola Jokić and Jamal Murray, averaging 18 points per game last season. “When you’re on a team with so many good players, you have to sacrifice,” Porter said. “But I feel like I haven’t reached my ceiling. I’m excited to see what I can do with a bigger role.”
The Nets, coming off a difficult season, are counting on Porter to be a focal point of their offense and a leader for a young roster. New head coach Jordi Fernández, who previously worked with Porter in Denver, believes his experience and work ethic will be vital in Brooklyn.
“He’s excited to be here. His work ethic is very good. He’s a pro, and that’s going to be good for the young guys,” Fernández said.
New Challenges and Expectations
Porter faces the challenge of producing without the playmaking of Jokić. While he’s been an efficient scorer, his numbers have dipped in games where he’s had to create more for himself. The Nets plan to give him more opportunities as a primary option, with Fernández already discussing new ways to use Porter’s shooting and size.
“There will be more isolation and self-creation,” Porter acknowledged. “Jordi and I have talked about putting me in comfortable spots on the floor. I’m looking forward to it.”
Now one of the oldest players on the Nets, Porter is embracing a leadership role. In a message to Brooklyn fans, he promised, “I’m excited to be here. I’m going to give you guys my all and help lead this team.”
As Porter settles into Brooklyn, both he and the Nets hope the trade unlocks another level in his game. With a bigger role and a fresh start, Porter’s calm confidence and championship experience could be exactly what the Nets need as they look to rebuild and surprise in the coming seasons.
