Brandon Moreno fires back and challenges flyweight champ Pantoja
Mexican fighter Brandon Moreno, one of the biggest names in the UFC, made it clear on Saturday that Brazilian flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja needs to accept a fight against him, arguing that no other opponent in the promotion would bring in more money.
"If he wants to make money for his family, I’m the guy," Moreno stated after securing a unanimous decision win over Australian Steve Erceg in the main event of UFC Fight Night in Mexico City. His victory over ‘Astroboy’ cements him as the top contender to challenge Pantoja for the title at Noche UFC, set for September 13 in Guadalajara.
A special win on home soil
The fight against Erceg wasn’t without controversy, as some fans booed due to the lack of explosive exchanges. "It was a tough fight. I couldn’t just go all out because he’s great at counterattacks. I know Mexico loves wars, fighters covered in blood, but sometimes it doesn’t work that way," Moreno explained.
This win is a milestone in his career, marking his first victory in Mexico after previously recording two losses and a draw on home soil. "This win is going to stay in my heart. I’d put it among the top three of my career. Everything about this week and my preparation felt different, and I really enjoyed it," concluded ‘The Assassin Baby’, who is now aiming to become a three-time flyweight champion.
