A redemption arc headlined the proceedings at Bangkok's Lumpinee Stadium, as one Thai standout finally snapped a rough skid. Meanwhile, the co-main event turned into a nail-biting survival act that came down to the final horn.
ONE Friday Fights 173 Results: Tonglampoon Snaps His Skid, Payakrut Survives
There's no better way to start the spookiest month of the year than with a card full of grueling battles, and ONE Friday Fights 173 delivered exactly that on Friday, October 2.
Tonglampoon Finally Ends His Skid
Thai veteran Tonglampoon FA Group stuck to his game plan and got exactly the result he needed, grinding out a split-decision victory over Brazilian fighter Dionatha Santos Tobias in a back-and-forth strawweight Muay Thai main event.
Tonglampoon controlled range early with low kicks and jabs. Santos Tobias, who made his return to ONE Friday Fights for the first time in over a year, answered back by shifting his attack upstairs, even catching a kick and countering with sharp combinations to the head that tested his Thai rival in the second round.
The pace never let up as the fight progressed, with both men trading heavy shots in the pocket. But Tonglampoon experienced a little more success as the match wore on, as he connected with damaging hooks to the head and body. And in the waning moments of the contest, they engaged in a close-quarters elbow battle, but the Thai got the better end of it when he switched things up and landed a thudding left cross.
It was close, but Tonglampoon’s late surge spoiled Santos Tobias’ comeback, as the Thai left with the split-decision, snapped his three-bout skid, and earned his 49th career victory.
A Knockdown Proves The Difference In A Razor-Close War
The co-main event turned into a true test of survival, as Payakrut Suajantokmuaythai clung to an early advantage despite everything Andrii Mezentsev threw his way in the final stretch.
Payakrut kept Mezentsev guessing from the outset, blending teeps and spinning strikes together before finding the opening he needed: a picture-perfect right hand that put the Ukrainian on the canvas in round two.
That knockdown nearly wasn't enough. Mezentsev came roaring back in the third and final frame, unloading heavy hooks that split Payakrut open and briefly had him retreating under pressure. But the Thai dug in, answering with sharp elbows to slow the onslaught just long enough to protect his lead on the cards.
When the scores were tallied, that second-round knockdown made all the difference, handing Payakrut a split decision, snapping his own two-fight losing streak, and lifting his record to 33-12.
