“Checo” Perez May Topple Colapinto at Alpine as He Sounds for Cadillac on Possible Return to Formula 1
Alpine is under increasing pressure as the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses. The French team sits at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship, far from the spotlight of the front runners. With just 19 points, all scored by Pierre Gasly over 12 races, the team is averaging only 1.58 points per Grand Prix.
Alpine is searching for a competitive F1 driver
The main issue for Renault lies in the performance of their second driver, in a scenario similar to Red Bull’s struggles with Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda. They first gave the seat to Jack Doohan, but after six underwhelming races, he was replaced by Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto.
Unfortunately for Alpine, Colapinto hasn’t been able to contribute either failing to score points or lift the team from the bottom which has fueled rumors of his potential removal from the A525 cockpit.
Bottas and Checo on Alpine radar
Amid this situation, Toto Wolff revealed that Flavio Briatore, Alpine’s interim director, is eyeing Valtteri Bottas, currently a reserve driver for Mercedes, as an immediate solution for the remainder of the season. However, just days before the Belgian Grand Prix, nothing has been confirmed.
Another name linked to the team is Sergio “Checo” Pérez. The Mexican driver was left without a seat for F1 2025 after his departure from Red Bull Racing in 2024. Although he's been heavily rumored to join Cadillac F1, a move to Alpineremains a possibility.
Journalist Michelle Foster from Planet F1 reports that Alpine is targeting Bottas for 2025 and Pérez for 2026. This option gains traction with Escudería Telmex recently becoming a commercial partner of the team—a brand closely tied to Checo’s racing career.
Can Alpine convince Checo?
Alpine’s desperation to turn things around could lead them to make drastic decisions, including replacing Colapintowith a proven, experienced driver capable of rescuing their disappointing season.
Checo Pérez fits that profile, but his ties to Cadillac may complicate any potential deal.
Can Alpine convince the Mexican to join their ranks and save their F1 campaign? The answer may come in the next few days.
