Could Formula 1 Expand to 12 Teams? “Checo” Pérez Could Be Part of One
FIA president opens the door to a new team on the grid, potentially giving the Mexican driver a new opportunity in 2026.
FIA President Suggests Expanding the Grid
In the midst of the 2025 Formula 1 season, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reignited speculation about expanding the grid to 12 teams—an idea that could directly benefit Sergio “Checo” Pérez.
Speaking to RacingNews365, Ben Sulayem revealed that several drivers have asked for fewer races in the calendar. To balance that, the governing body is considering allowing a new team to join the championship. “I still believe we need more teams than races. Drivers tell me: ‘Please, no more races,’” he stated.
Although the new team wouldn’t arrive immediately, the president acknowledged that talks are underway. “If a team from China gets the approval of FOM (Formula One Management)—and I’m sure they would—it would bring more revenue. But beyond that, it must bring value and be competitive,” he said.
Could “Checo” Join a New Team?
The possibility of adding a twelfth team comes just as Cadillac is set to make its debut in 2026. There’s growing speculation that Checo Pérez, currently without a confirmed seat for next season, could be a candidate for a spot on the American team or the rumored Chinese entry.
The FIA spent three years reviewing Cadillac’s application before granting them a spot on the grid. Now, all eyes are on Asia, particularly China, as the potential home of the next team. This expansion could offer new opportunities for veteran drivers like Pérez, who remain highly marketable and have the experience to help a new project grow.
While Ben Sulayem did not confirm a timeline, his comments make it clear that the door is open. “The new team must support the long-term sustainability of Formula 1, not just boost revenue,” he concluded.
For fans of Checo Pérez, the idea of a new team presents a glimmer of hope for seeing the Mexican star remain in the sport beyond 2025.
