Max Verstappen Breaks Silence on Norris-Piastri Battle: 'Very Bizarre'
Max Verstappen calls the sudden shift in McLaren’s intra-team title fight and Oscar Piastri’s dip in form “very bizarre” amid intense 2025 F1 championship battles.
Max Verstappen acknowledged the surprising change in momentum between McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri during the 2025 Formula 1 season.
After Norris suffered an engine failure at Zandvoort, Piastri looked set for his first world title. However, recent races have flipped that narrative, with Norris gaining a significant points advantage.
Verstappen described this drastic turnaround as “very bizarre,” admitting he has no clear explanation for Piastri’s sudden dip in performance. Despite this, Verstappen emphasized that the situation is ultimately not his concern, focusing instead on his own championship pursuit.
Championship Implications and Verstappen’s Outlook
Verstappen has made notable gains in closing his championship gap following McLaren's internal struggles and errors after the summer break, but he remains realistic about overcoming McLaren's strength and consistency.
He highlighted how closing the points deficit happened partly due to a combination of circumstances favoring Red Bull, including McLaren’s mistakes and his own strong performances. While Verstappen has earned podiums in recent races, he acknowledged that the “real picture” shows McLaren’s stronghold, especially with Norris’s recent consecutive wins restoring the lead in the title chase.
Verstappen also noted that penalties and incidents, such as those involving Piastri in Brazil, have affected the championship dynamics.
Piastri’s Struggles and Team Dynamics
Verstappen expressed confusion over Piastri’s form, rejecting the idea that Piastri suddenly lost his driving skills, and avoided making harsh judgments about what caused the slump. He admitted he would personally find it frustrating to be in Piastri’s position, losing a large points lead unexpectedly.
The Australian driver himself has had tough conversations with McLaren as the pressure of the championship battle intensifies. Incidents like the penalty in Brazil have compounded his challenges, with team principal Andrea Stella and others involved in managing the difficult intra-team balance.
Verstappen contrasted his approach to adversity with McLaren’s handling of the situation, noting differences in personality and competitiveness between himself and the McLaren drivers.
