Mozambique host Senegal this Friday, September 25, at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto in Maputo for the opening round of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Kickoff is set for 9:00 AM ET / 6:00 AM PT, with the match available LIVE on beIN SPORTS.

How does Mozambique arrive?

Mozambique head into the match after making history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the knockout stage for the first time. The Mambas also secured their first-ever AFCON victory by beating Gabon 3-2 in the group stage.

However, Mozambique are going through a difficult spell. Following that historic win, the team suffered defeats against Cameroon, Nigeria, Oman and Indonesia, leaving the Mambas with four consecutive losses heading into the qualifiers.

How does Senegal arrive?

Senegal will begin a new era under head coach Patrick Vieira. The former France international took over after Pape Thiaw left the position, and Vieira will now take charge of his first official match with the Lions of Teranga against Mozambique.

The new coach has retained several experienced players, including Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Pape Matar Sarr, Ismaïla Sarr, Nicolas Jackson and Iliman Ndiaye. Sadio Mané is the biggest absentee from the squad, although Vieira said his omission was due to a physical issue rather than international retirement.

Senegal enter the qualifiers after competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Belgium in the last 32 after beating Iraq and facing France and Norway during the group stage.

A pivotal match for both teams

Both Mozambique and Senegal will be looking to make a positive start to their respective campaigns in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. The match is the opening fixture in Group J, which also includes Sudan and Ethiopia.

The historical record heavily favors Senegal, who have won seven of the nine meetings between the two countries, with the other two ending in draws. Mozambique have never beaten Senegal.

The Mambas will also have home advantage during the opening stage of qualifying, with both of their first two matches scheduled to take place at the Estádio Nacional do Zimpeto. After facing Senegal, Mozambique will host Sudan on September 29.
