From promising talent to a key figure for the Elephants
Malick Yalcouyé showed against Ghana why he is one of the young African players worth watching. The midfielder scored a goal and won the penalty that helped Ivory Coast make a strong start to their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Much of the spotlight had been on Diomande, Real Madrid's new signing for this season, but the 20-year-old Yalcouyé emerged as one of the game's biggest protagonists.
His performance offered another glimpse of why Brighton & Hove Albion secured him on a contract running until 2029.
Who is Malick Yalcouyé?
According to Transfermarkt, Yalcouyé was born on November 18, 2005, in Bandiagara, Mali, and developed as a footballer in Ivory Coast.
At just 20 years old, the midfielder is already approaching 100 professional appearances, having experienced several different leagues during the early stages of his career.
His development included time with ASEC Mimosas, one of African football's most prominent clubs, before his career took him to Europe.
From Sweden to Brighton
Yalcouyé played for Sweden's IFK Göteborg before joining Brighton in July 2024.
The English club handed him a long-term contract before using loan spells to continue his development.
One of those moves took him to Sturm Graz, where he made 26 appearances, scored four goals and won the Austrian Bundesliga.
He later joined Swansea City, making 33 appearances in the Championship.
His opportunity at Brighton
After gaining experience away from the club, Yalcouyé returned to Brighton and was given his opportunity.
The midfielder responded by scoring two goals, including one in a memorable game against Chelsea, continuing the progress he had shown during his loan spells.
That development eventually opened the door to the Ivory Coast senior national team.
A dream Ivory Coast debut
Yalcouyé's senior debut for Ivory Coast came at the start of their qualifying campaign for AFCON 2027.
And he wasted little time making an impact.
The young midfielder matched Diomande's influence and managed to directly affect the scoreline.
While the Real Madrid player looked dangerous and drove the attack, Yalcouyé scored and won the penalty that Franck Kessié converted to make it 2-0.
It was a dream introduction for the Elephants and another sign of the rapid rise of a player who, at just 20 years old, has already gained experience across African and European football.
