CAF Impose Tough Sanctions on Senegal and Morocco After the 2025 AFCON Final
CAF imposes harsh sanctions after chaos in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced severe disciplinary sanctions on Wednesday against Senegal and Morocco following the incidents that occurred during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, a match that ended surrounded by controversy.
The governing body confirmed punishments for players, coaches, and national federations, citing violations of the principles of fair play, integrity, and respect for match officials.
Sanctions against Senegal
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) was among the most heavily penalized:
- Pape Bouna Thiaw, head coach of Senegal, was suspended for five matches and fined $100,000.
- Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye each received two-match suspensions for protesting the referee.
- Senegal was fined more than $600,000 for the conduct of its players, coaching staff, and supporters.
Sanctions against Morocco
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) also faced significant penalties:
- Achraf Hakimi was suspended for two matches, with one match suspended for one year on probation.
- Ismaël Saibari received a three-match suspension and a $100,000 fine.
- Morocco was fined $315,000 for invading the VAR area, the behavior of ball boys, and the use of lasers in the stadium.
CAF rejects Morocco’s protest
CAF also confirmed that it rejected the protest filed by Morocco against Senegal, officially closing the disciplinary case related to the final.
