Sierra Leone Wants to Return to the Africa Cup of Nations

The road to AFCON 2027 begins for Sierra Leone with a match that comes with an unusual circumstance: despite being listed as the home team, it will have to play away from home.

The Leone Stars will face Zimbabwe this Thursday at Stade Ben M’Hamed El Abdi in El Jadida, Morocco, in the opening round of the AFCON 2027 Qualifiers.

The team coached by Didier Gomes Da Rosa begins this new chapter with the goal of returning to the continental tournament after missing out on the 2025 edition.

Its most recent appearance came at AFCON 2021, which was played in Cameroon at the beginning of 2022, where it was eliminated in the group stage.

For this first international window, Gomes Da Rosa called up 25 players, including Osman Kakay, Juma Bah, Tyrese Fornah and Sullay Kaikai.

After facing Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone will have another important match against Equatorial Guinea on September 28.

Zimbabwe Begins a New Era

On the other side is another national team beginning a new project.

Zimbabwe enters the qualifiers under Spanish coach Ramón Catalá, who took charge of the Warriors in August 2026.

The coach will have several experienced players available from the start.

Marshall Munetsi, Marvelous Nakamba and Tino Kadewere are among the biggest names on a team that competed in the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The goal now is to qualify for consecutive editions.

The Warriors also began their preparations for this match in Morocco before traveling to El Jadida for the opening round.

After the opener, Zimbabwe will return home to face DR Congo on September 28 in its second qualifying match.

Group E Begins to Take Shape

The matchup between Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe completes an important opening round in Group E.

The two national teams share the group with DR Congo and Equatorial Guinea, who also face each other this Thursday in Kinshasa.

The format leaves very little room for error.

Each team will play six matches, with the top two in the group qualifying directly for AFCON 2027.

The next edition of the continental tournament will take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, and will be hosted by three countries for the first time: Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

For Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe, the road begins in Morocco.
